Luca Fantacci

Research Unit Director. Luca Fantacci teaches economic history and history of economic thought at Bocconi University, Milan. His research focuses on financial crises, monetary reform, complementary and digital currencies, and the work of John Maynard Keynes. He is the co-editor of Money and Calculation (Palgrave 2010) and the author, with Massimo Amato, of The End of Finance (Polity 2011), Saving the Market from Capitalism (Polity 2014), and A Fistful of Bitcoin (Bocconi UP 2020). Together with Amato, he has acted as consultant to public administrations for the development of innovative exchange and payment solutions, designing, in particular, a local currency for the City of Nantes in France, a clearing system for Lombardy Region in Italy, and a complementary currency for bankruptcy procedures for the Italian Ministry of Justice. Inspired by Keynes’s ideas, Fantacci is working on clearing schemes, both at European and at local level, aimed at facilitating what today appears to be systemically obstructed: the payment of debts and the circulation of money.
